ABOUT

Historic Gateway Neighborhood Corporation (HGNC) was established in 1992 as an expansion of two pre-existing entities—the East 4th Street Local Development Corporation and the Prospect Avenue Merchant Group. Originally formed to guide the revitalization of Cleveland’s Gateway District, HGNC played a central role in transforming the area into a vibrant mixed-use neighborhood and was instrumental in saving and redeveloping many landmarks, including the East 4th Street entertainment district.

Over the years, HGNC’s preservation leadership has expanded to encompass some of the largest and most impactful historic rehabilitation projects in Cleveland, advancing both economic vitality and civic pride through the adaptive reuse of significant buildings.

Today, as preservation advocates—whether protecting a building, honoring a culture, or celebrating a heritage—HWDDC champions awareness and pride in Cleveland’s diverse historic districts. The organization produces programs and events that are educational, engaging, and entertaining, all designed to strengthen economic development and foster community pride in our city’s architectural and cultural legacy.

OUR Mission

We are dedicated to promoting historic, cultural, and heritage preservation through advocacy, education, and programs that support the ongoing revitalization of Cleveland’s unique historic districts.

OUR purpose

We exist to preserve and celebrate Cleveland’s historic landmark districts—advancing architectural, cultural, and economic vitality through preservation advocacy, education, and creative placemaking. By connecting the city’s heritage to its future, HGNC fosters inclusive neighborhoods where history inspires progress and civic pride thrives.

our vision

We envision Cleveland as a city where the preservation and adaptive reuse of its historic buildings anchor vibrant neighborhoods that celebrate the community’s history and diverse cultural heritages. Through these restored landmarks, residents and visitors alike can learn from the city’s past, connect across generations, and experience how history continues to shape a dynamic, inclusive, and enduring urban future.
